The sister probably lost the ring. She could have taken it off while she was washing dishes, or going to bed. Maybe one of her kids took it accidently, maybe a cat knocked it off the table. There are many things that could have happened to it. Like the alternate universe with all the socks that never made it out of the dryer.

Why are the parents also so sure she stole the wedding ring? I would be so angry if I were being accused of something like that. It means they already have to view me through a lens that I'm capable of that, and that I must have a motive.

Older sister accuses 25-year-old sister of stealing her wedding ring while babysitting, sister refuses to babysit again as family pressures her to confess: “She threatened to call the police if I didn’t return it”
Stealing is as old as time. How do you think they thought of paradise and inferno? Someone had to be punished for something, and stealing was on the top of the agenda because it was an easy act to commit. These days, even with smartphones and cameras, stealing is a pressing issue. Most people go through a klepto phase in their lives when they're younger. Of course, not everyone, but on a scale of sins it's on the more innocent side of the spectrum. Most people grow out of it as they get older, and some people even have rules regarding it. I had a friend who did a negligible amount of stealing in her life, but she always said she would never steal from independent businesses, or from individual people, especially family and friends.
But in the story below, the protagonist is being blamed for stealing her sister's wedding ring. In Dante's last circle of punishments, treachery and betrayal against family is the worst sin of them all. She claims she didn't do it, but you'll have to read the full story below to find out.
